What’s the best WordPress theme to use?

Hello guys,

I’m really new to blogging and want to make my site look great. What’s my best choice when it comes to WordPress themes? Free or paid?

    Gareth,

Welcome to the Q&A section of Income Diary!

For a beginner blogger, the choice (which there are thousands) of which them to go with can be overwhelming to say the least! However, in my past experience, the selection of theme really comes down the purpose of your site. For example, are you planning to monetize your blog via Google Adsense? Maybe your are looking to create a product information blog in hopes to monetize your blog from the Amazon Affiliate program. These types of questions are ones you want to ask yourself when searching for WordPress themes. Generally speaking, most WordPress themes are interchangeable and can serve a diverse purpose. However, if you’re looking to make money from your blog, put yourself in your visitor’s shoes, and think about what they would like to see most, and what would “covert” the best.

Once you have decided on the purpose of your blog, you will then have a general idea of what the theme must provide you (opt-in box, squeeze page, etc..). Once you have laid out your criteria, I would search out free and premium themes and compare and contrast how well they satisfy your criteria and/or visitor, then make your final decision on that.

My personal preference, if I am creating a blog / site with the idea that it is going to be a 100% Google Adsense niche site, I stick with a very simple and clean free theme. If I am launching a site that I plan to build a brand around, or plan to consider it an authority site, I stick with premium themes for this.

A simple Google search for Premium WordPress Themes will provide you with pages of results to keep you busy for hours. I typically bookmark about five that really grab my attention and then narrow it down from there. Do not be afraid to reach out to friends and family to get their opinion on a potential theme. Have them point out what they like or don’t like about it.

As for free themes, they are all over the net as well, and you can also locate them within your WordPress dashboard too!

In closing, I hope I have been able to give you some guidance or direction on what you should take into consideration when selecting your WordPress theme, and whether to go with a free or paid theme. Unfortunately, it is truly one of those questions / decisions that have to be made by you, as you know what you like and prefer most, and you have your ideal visitor and blog purpose in mind!

Thanks again for the great question, and please do not hesitate to post for additional clarification.

    Best wishes!
    -Alex
